✦ Synopsis
We report a case of fungal infection caused by Curvularia geniculata (C. senegalensis) in a patient suffering from carcinoma cervix with metastasis in ovaries. C. geniculata was repeatedly isolated from the peripheral blood of the patient on Sabouraud's dextrose agar (SDA) medium with chloramphenicol (0.5 mg/ml). The pathogenic potentiality of C. geniculata for albino rats was investigated by intravenous inoculation of the pathogen (1.5 × 10 6 cfu/ml) into immunosuppressed and healthy rats. Results showed the ability of the fungus to invade visceral organs of the test animals. The target organs of the pathogen were lungs, liver and kidneys in both healthy and cortisone treated (CT) albino rats. The in vitro antifungal susceptibility of C. geniculata was tested against five antifungal drugs. Ketoconazole and itraconazole were found to be effective against the pathogen. The isolation of C. geniculata from clinical sources should be considered pathologically significant.
