✦ Synopsis

A hypothesis for the sodium reabsorption process, located in the duet of the sweat gland, is proposed. In the proximal part (coiled portion) of the duct sodium eMoride reabsorption takes place. In patients with cystic fibrosis this type of reabsorption does not occur or only at a very slow rate. In the distal part of the duct (straight part) an exchange mechanism is postulated, which delivers potassium or hyrogen ions to the sweat in exchange for sodimn.

In contrast to the first step in reabsorption this second process should be demostrated to exist also in the patients.
