โœฆ Synopsis

Evolution and adaptation are among the most profound issues in biology and philosophy because, in contemplating the amazing variety among animal species, we are inevitably led to ponder our own nature.'' -R. Nieuwenhuys, H.J. ten Donkelaar, and C. Nicholson

The Journal of Comparative Neurology, as a matter of policy, does not publish book reviews. Hence, when the three large volumes constituting the monumental work, The Central Nervous System of Vertebrates, by Rudolf Nieuwenhuys, Hans J. ten Donkelaar, and Charles Nicholson, were published last year by Springer Verlag (Fig. ), we declined to provide a review. However, after examining the books, we decided that they represent a unique resource that defines a field and a unique opportunity for the editors of The Journal of Comparative Neurology to define our relationship to that field. Hence, we will break with tradition this one time to use the occasion of the publication of these volumes as an opportunity for the Journal to take stock of its heritage and its future.

In recent years, many studies have focused on the fate and potential of neural progenitors in vertebrates. While much progress has been made, many questions remain about the mechanisms which lead to neural diversity, in terms of both the regionalization of the nervous system and specification of cel

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is a rare neoplasm, but it is occurring with increased frequency even among apparently immunocompetent patients. Although secondary malignancies frequently involve the lymphoreticular system, PCNSL has been reported as a second neoplasm only once previ
