✦ Synopsis

A multipole analysis is'd~veloped for the effect of a set of passive shims in dipole magnets of saddle coil type as used in particle accelerators. Examples show how it is possible to offset the relatively large field errors experienced in superconducting synchrotrons at low excitation when the beam is injected. The use of ferromagnetic or superconducting shims in this way on the long magnets of the future would mitigate the demand for very fine filaments in the conductor on account of remanent fields.
