✦ Synopsis

analysis of particle motion in rapidly oscillating flows provides a simple conceptual basis for particle retardation, hovering, and levitation. The method of averaging from nonlinear mechanics is the major mathematical tool in' this analysis. The results provide a conservative design basis for particle motion modification in fluctuating flows, a phenomenon which may find application in flotation, settling, and multiphase contacting operations.

Abstrac~Flow behavior of three-phase flow was studied using a two-dimensional draft-tube fluidized bed operating with air, water and alginate particles (ds = 2.5 mm, Ps = 1040 kg/ma). Momentum transfer between a particle and three-phase flow was assessed from settling velocities of tracer particles

## Abstract The first experimental measurement of particle‐size distribution (PSD) from undiluted, rapidly flowing potassium chloride (KCl) suspensions using continuous‐wave photon migration techniques is presented. PSDs were obtained from a laboratory simulation of production‐line slurries used in
