Un virus. La guerre contre les Partials - ces êtres mi-humains, mi-robots - a décimé la population. Seuls quelques milliers retranchés à Long Island ont survécu. Et le virus mystérieux - le RM - les tue petit à petit. Chaque nouveau-né vit moins d'une journée si ce n'est quelques minutes. La race humaine s'éteint inexorablement et aucun médecin n'a de remède.
Un espoir. Dans cette atmosphère désespérée, Kira, jeune interne en médecine, a une nouvelle hypothèse. Pourquoi les Partials sont-ils naturellement immunisés contre le RM ? Et si la solution venait de l'ennemi juré lui-même ?
Une héroïne. Kira se lance alors dans une expédition au risque de devenir une hors-la-loi. Infiltrer les Partials, en capturer un et le ramener à long Island pour l'étudier et peut-être, trouver un antidote. Mais le pari est risqué : soit elle réussit et sauve l'humanité, soit elle échoue et sera considérée comme une terroriste par son propre gouvernement. À moins que ce soient les Partials eux-mêmes qui ne la tuent...
