✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The first nucleotide sequences of hepatitis E virus (HEV) acquired in the United Kingdom are described. The sequences are novel and are related most closely to HEV isolated from Greece (Greece 2 strain), consistent with their having been derived from an indigenous European virus. HEV was assumed until recently to be rare in the United Kingdom and other industrialised countries and, consequently, hepatitis E may be under‐diagnosed in industrialised countries. J. Med. ## Abstract Although no outbreaks of hepatitis E have been reported in Mongolia, a significant proportion of the general population had antibodies to hepatitis E virus (HEV). Sequence analysis was performed on 50 measles viruses (MV) isolated in Argentina. Forty-six were obtained during the current outbreak (1997)(1998), three from the previous outbreak (1991) and one sporadic case (1994). A 377-bp fragment of the hemagglutinin (H) gene was directly amplified by RT-PCR f

It was suggested that hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 4 is associated more closely with the severity of hepatitis E than genotype 3, although the virological basis remains unknown. The aim of this study was to examine whether genomic differences among genotype 4 HEVs are responsible for the develop
