โœฆ Synopsis

This investigation presents a study of the effects of machine part set-up orientation on machining time. For a multiaxis milling machine, each individual axis of the machine has its own maximum velocity and acceleration. In order to have an optimal cutting speed, we propose that all the axes of a machine tool should be kept simultaneously at their maximum speeds whenever possible. In this paper, the relationship between machine tool kinematics and cutter path geometry is investigated. A formula for calculating the workpiece set-up angle for optimal cutting speed is analytically derived. A simulation package is developed; several eases are used for illustration.
