In Germany, two engineers at the Special Polymers Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) have come up with a simple and cost-effective way of sealing pipes or cable entrances.
The connections in cables and pipes that are used by household gas, water and electricity supplies can become loose. One common problem is that the entrance points into buildings are prone to leaks. Groundwater and other seepage takes advantage of the most accessible route to infiltrate the walls -often wetting them and causing damage.
The engineers, Holger Wack and Philipp Klose, have focused their efforts on solving this annoying problem by using polyacrylic granulates that are capable of swelling. They say that the principle behind the sealing effect is extremely simple. When these powdery particles
