Abstract

The geometry of a microstrip antenna is altered by using a periodic pattern. The aperture‐coupled antenna is realized by combining 2 × 2 unit cells in a square geometry. A 33% reduction of the resonant frequency of the original plain patch is reached by locally increasing the inductance of the unit cell. Conversely, a 60% surface reduction of dimensions of the original antenna is observed for a given operating frequency. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
