This issue of the journal contains articles, selected after peer reviewing, from invited and contributed presentations made at the Third International Workshop on Parallel Matrix Algorithms and Applications (PMAAÕ04), that took place on 20-22 October, 2004, at the serene ''Centre International de Rencontres Mathe ´matiques'' (CIRM) in Luminy, near Marseille, France, 2004. This workshop was co-chaired by Erricos Kontoghiorghes, Yousef Saad, Ahmed Sameh, and Denis Trystram and was also cosponsored by CIRM and Elsevier. Denis TrystramÕs team together with CIRM staff undertook the local organization arrangements. The Program Committee consisted of P.
