✦ Synopsis

the International Conference ParCo2001 was held at the University of Naples, Italy. The purpose was to discuss the most recent developments on all aspects of high performance computing.

The impact of new technologies in numerical analysis, and nonlinear optimization in particular, was very strong in the last decade. A large amount of work has been motivated by the need to either conform the existing numerical techniques to the new parallel architectures or to devise new parallel strategies, in order to take full advantage of the huge computational power available.

This special issue includes some of the papers presented at a minisymposium on Parallel Computing in Nonlinear Optimization, as well as some other contributions from researchers actively working in this field. Obviously, due to their small number, these papers cannot represent all possible standpoints of parallel computing in optimization. Nevertheless, we believe they are able to give the flavor of some the most interesting trends in parallel numerical optimization. An overview of the field is given by the editorial guest paper which opens the special issue.

Finally, we want to thank the ParCo2001 conference committee for the opportunity of organizing the minisymposium. We also wish to thank the contributors, the anonymous referees and the editors of the Parallel Computing Journal for helping us to produce this special issue.

Parallel computing is fastly gaining in importance for the solution of logistics problems. The need to resort to parallel computing is due in part to the large scale of these problems. In addition, a number of real-time logistics applications arising, for example, in the delivery of emergency servic
