The OCiagon on the Mile End campus, an atmospheric reading room built in the 19th century, housed the registration desk, the poster sessions, booths, and receptions, while the plenary sessions and paper presentations took place in the surrounding lecture halls. The Parallel Computing series of conferences was started in 1983 with the aim to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art as wel! as future trends in the development and application of parallel computing. The former conferences took place in Berlin [5,6] and in Lciden [2]. This year's conference followed the pattern set by its predecessors and provided a forum for the community of universities, research laboratories, and vendors involvcd in parallel processing. It was attended by 143 participants (previous confcrcnc~~: jgS} from i9 countries and 10 exhibitors. Most participants came from the United Kingdom (45 delt:gatcs), Germany (20), Italy (18), France OS), and the United States (IS). The chairman of the conference committee was G.R. Joubert (Univer~iWt Clausthal, Clausthal-ZdlerfckL Germany); the local organization and arr~ngcmcllls were coordinated by H.M. Liddell (CClIilC for rarailel Computing, Queen Mary and Westfield College). The conference was based on a private initiative of individuals from the academic area, without support of any of the national, European or worldwide computer societies. It was sponsored by Alliant Computer Systems UK Ltd.
