Acusado de un crimen que no ha cometido, Papillon es condenado a trabajos forzados en una colonia penitenciaria en la Guayana francesa. Cuarenta días después de su llegada intenta su primera fuga y es confinado en una solitaria celda de castigo y enviado al peor de los lugares de la tierra: la Isla del Diablo. Nadie ha logrado jamás escapar con vida de allí, pero él no cejará en sus intentos de recuperar la libertad, burlando a sus brutales carceleros, atravesando en un precario bote un mar infestado de tiburones, internándose en la selva y enfrentándose a desafíos sobrehumanos… Aunque algunos ponen en duda su veracidad como obra autobiográfica, resulta interesante por la vívida descripción de las, muchas veces, condiciones inhumanas que padecen los reclusos, así como las ansias de libertad del protagonista.
