I crave space as Chairman of the Editorial Committee to draw attention to the rumour that the British Government is contemplating introducing value added tax on books and learned journals. I do not need to detail to your readers how unfortunate this would be. It is true that all over the world we have had to face rises in the real costs of our lives and in that sense one can see the argument for value addition in relation to The British Journal of Surgery. Nevertheless, the free circulation of information is something we should regard as part of our social infrastructure, not an item which has to be seen as revenue for the government.

I hope that our United Kingdom members will do everything that they can to oppose this idea by lobbying their MPs, both locally and in the Euro Parliament.
