✦ Synopsis

Germany hydrogen infrastructure 'roadmap'

The German Hydrogen Association (Deutscher Wasserstoff Verband, DWV) has begun work on a 'Roadmap for the installation of a hydrogen infrastructure in Germany', with a basic paper presented at the Hydrogen Expo in Hamburg in October.

The 'roadmap' will not contain a practical implementation strategy, but will support the development of one by industry and government. So far in Germany the main political driving force towards a hydrogen infrastructure has come at the state level, with little direct federal support.

The initiative will focus on the application of hydrogen for transport purposes, while acknowledging its importance for stationary applications. The latter, however, will for the foreseeable future be dominated by fuel cell systems using natural gas, so there is not such a strong demand for a hydrogen infrastructure from this sector. The hydrogen requirements for portable applications are small, and can initially be delivered through device manufacturers' distribution networks.

The DWV will coordinate with similar initiatives and projects -such as the German 'Transport Energy Strategy', the 'Clean Energy Partnership' in Berlin and the EU's 'Clean Urban Transportation for Europe' (CUTE) project etc.

-to avoid duplication or contradiction. This will be made much easier by the fact that many of the partners in these programs are DWV members.

The objectives of the roadmap are: formulation of a hydrogen strategy for Germany by industry together with the federal government; definition and creation of suitable boundary conditions by government; and activities coordinated by the relevant sectors of German industry in the framework of a national hydrogen strategy.
