✦ Synopsis

We postulate that palatal myoclonus after infarction of the brainstem or cerebellum, o r both, is the manifestation of denervation supersensitivity secondary to lesions involving the dentatorubroolivary system. Two cases of our o w n and 31 from t h e English a n d French literature were analyzed i n order to determine t h e delay between t h e occurrence of presumed anatomical lesions and the recognition of palatal myoclonus. The intervals varied from 2 to 40 months with t h e median between 10 and 11 months. T h e natural history of palatal myoclonus following brainstern infarction seemed consistent w i t h the hypothesis.

Multipotential neuroepithelial stem cells are thought to give rise to all the differentiated cells of the central nervous system (CNS). The developmental potential of these multipotent stem cells becomes more restricted as they differentiate into progressively more committed cells and ultimately int
