✦ Synopsis
significantly reduced A&E workload as our results have shown that about 42% of total presentations to hospital are to MDU whose working hours account for only 24% (40 hours/week) of the total A&E accessible hours (168 hours/week). This indirectly implies patients' preference for MDU despite their option to choose either during MDU Hours. The figure of £ 271 per MDU attendance may not truly reflect the actual management cost for a painful crisis as it has been calculated by dividing the total running cost by total patients seen irrespective of the nature of the problem. Conclusion: 18 month retrospective study shows that severe sickle painful crisis can be managed effectively and safely in MDU setting. Also this approach is cost-effective by reducing unnecessary hospital admissions significantly.
