✦ Synopsis

Membrane inlet mass spectrometry has been used to determine the effect oΒ£ oxygen on methanogenesis in samples from a rumen and an anaerobic digester.

A membrane covered Photobacterium prob% in conjunction with the mass spectrometer, was used to measure low (~> 30 nM__) levels of dissolved oxygen. Methanogenesis in both systems was inhibited by dissolved oxygen concentrations below 30 nM__. In samples from the rumen, oxygen inhibition of methanogenesis was fully reversible; in anaerobic digester samples short term irreversibility was observed.
