Cabot acquires Superior Micropowders Boston-based Cabot Corporation has purchased the assets of Superior MicroPowders in Albuquerque, New Mexico for approximately US$16m, much of which will be allocated to in-process R&D. SMP is an advanced materials development and manufacturing company with proprietary nano-and micropowder production systems and manufacturing capability, which has been working with several major companies to develop particle applications for the electronics, fuel cell, display and other markets.

SMP was founded in 1997 by Dr Toivo Kodas and Dr Mark Hampden-Smith, two leaders in aerosol processing of materials. They will continue as technical directors, while Barry Neal has been named general manager of SMP.

Competition for Global takeover

Soon after Calgary-based Global Thermoelectric and Quantum Technologies in California settled legal action by major Global shareholder Enbridge, challenging the Global-Quantum combination, Global received an unsolicited competing proposal that its board says is a 'superior proposal'.

Global will commence negotiations with the new party, once a confidentiality agreement is executed. A further announcement will be made when either an agreement is entered into with respect to the competing proposal, or discussions are discontinued.

The resolution of the Enbridge court case included a commitment by Quantum to spend a minimum of C$6m (US$4.3m)
