Higher plants do not ordinarily possess ketocarotenoids due to the absence of a carotenoid ketolase enzyme. We expressed genes coding for marine-bacterial enzymes b-carotene ketolase (CrtW) and b-carotene hydroxylase (CrtZ) in tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum) by transplastomic engineering. A novel
