✦ Synopsis


The polarographic literature 1 gives many examples of cathodic catalytic currents which are produced by the chemical reaction of the species reduced at the electrode with some other compound present in the solution. The result of this reaction is the regeneration of the depolarizer and thus an increase of the polarographic current. From the increase of this current the rate constant of the parallel chemical reaction can be calculated. Anodic catalytic currents were first observed in polarography by Wiesner 2 and recently by Papouchado and Adams 3.

The present paper reports the study of anodic catalytic currents of the oxidation of ferrocyanide ion at the Pt-electrode in the presence of amidopyrine (1-phenyl-2,3dimethyl-4-dimethylamino-5-pyrazolone), histidine, histamine, pyridoxal, aniline and diethylaniline in alkaline solutions using a voltammetric method. The rate constant of the parallel chemical reaction according to the scheme:
