โœฆ Synopsis

An experimental and modeling study of the oxidation of H2S is reported. The experiments entailed induction time measurements in reflected shock waves, in 4 to 22% H2S in air, some of which contained from 1.6 to 13% HzO, with PI = I atm and 950 < T 5 < 1200ยฐK. Regression analyses gave the induction time formulas r = 10 74 exp ( 13000/T)[HzS]03z (with r in seconds, T in degrees Kelvin, and [H2S] in tool cm-3) for dry test gas and r = 10 s2 exp ( 13400/T)lH2S]O t8 for moist test gas. Computer modeling using a 17-species, 57-reaction mechanism led to reasonably satisfactory agreement between model calculations and experiments, including earlier studies on H2S combustion.

It has been demonstrated that Thiobacillus denitrificans may be readily cultured aerobically in batch and continuous flow reactors on H2S(g) under sulfide limiting conditions. Under these conditions sulfide concentrations in the culture medium were less than IpM resulting in very low concentrations
