Certainly, more research is needed to determine whether there is a critical period of readiness before which entry into school may lead to reduced academic performance. Perhaps, too, we need to see if criteria based on neurological, Piagetian, or other developmental models might serve the screening process better than criteria based solely on chronological age. Such criteria might help psychologists and educators develop standards for school readiness that would better insure that early school entry would not lead to long-term academic disadvantage.
