A helicopter survey was carried out on 56 water bodies in the Abisko mountains, Swedish Lapland, in August 1981. Water chemistry was found to be highly correlated with bedrock quality in the drainage area of the lakes. Low pH values (down to 5.1) appeared in the neighbourhood of sulphuric iron-ores.

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
During two winters, the benthic invertebrates in a shallow northern Swedish lake (66 Β°N) were studied. The lake is iceβcovered for about 200 days a year. Live Lamellibranchiata, Oligochaeta. Hydracarina, Isopoda, Heteroptera, Cole optera and Diptera were found in samples of ice and of frozen lakeβbottom sediments. During the winter in which the bottom froze deepest, a 70β90% decrease in numbers of live Chironomidae larvae was recorded between the autumn and following early spring.
