T his program had its origin in a conversation in the late 1960s between John K. Frost of Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) and Nathaniel I. Berlin. This was at a time when an NCI multinstitutional program to determine the value of searching for tumor cells in the circulatory system was nearing completion. This also was at a time when the intramural and contract supported, but not the grants supported, efforts of the NCI were under the direction of the Division of Cancer Treatment (Gordon Zubrod, director), the Division of Cancer Etiology (Frank Rauscher, director), and the Division of Cancer Biology and Diagnosis (Nathaniel I. Berlin).
