✦ Synopsis

To satisfy the very tight physics requirements for an electromagnetic calorimeter at the LHC, the ATLAS collaboration has chosen a lead-liquid argon sampling technique, with the absorbers bent in accordion shape. The calorimeter concept will be presented here together with a discussion of the first full-scale module construction, with particular emphasis on mechanical issues.
