โฆ Synopsis
Osteoporosis is currently deยฎned as a reduced skeletal bone mineral density (BMD). This deยฎnition is based on the WHO diagnostic criteria (World Health Organization, 1994), which classify persons in the normal, osteopenic or osteoporotic range depending on their standardized BMD score compared to a young adult population mean (T-score). Osteoporosis denotes a T-score that is at least 2.5 standard deviations below the young adult mean value. Severe or established' osteoporosis is deยฎned as above but also includes the presence of one or more documented fragility fractures, usually at the wrist, spine or hip. Osteopenia, or low bone mass, is deยฎned as a T-score that lies between ร1 and ร2.5. In normal adults, skeletal mass reaches a maximum amount (peak bone mass') during adolescence or early adulthood. After growth has ceased, BMD remains constant until the menopause. In patients suffering from eating disorders, this natural course of bone turnover could be massively altered.
