The analogy between thermal stress and swelling (drying) stress in wood makes it possible to give mathematical formulae for calculating ~he drying and swelling stresses in many situations. The models allow for viscoelastic and plastic phenomena.

✦ Synopsis
Plastic stress arising in wood during drying is calculated according to the theoretical model developed earlier. The mechanism of stress reversal and the type of residual stress corresponding to different values of material constants are shown. The results are in qualitative agreement with experimental evidence.
