β¦ Synopsis
The strength of the coupling between two normal vibrations of the same symmetry depends in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation upon the electronic state of the molecule. The consequences of a time-dependent relaxation of this coupling are investigated. Such a relaxation can be brought about either by an electronic excitation or by a-forc!d re-arrangement of nuclei in the molecule. Calculations on a model system containing two coupled harmonic oscillators show that the relaxation will lead to oscillating Franck-Condon factors.
