✦ Synopsis

This study presents the results of the global orthotropic elastic behaviour of granular materials due to the fabric variation in the two-dimensional case. It shows that the characteristics of isotropic materials may be simulated by a granular assembly with fabric diagram represented by a circle. On the other hand, ,the mechanical behaviour of orthotropic elastic materials can be imitated through an elliptical fabric diagraim. The larger the ratio between long and short axes of fabric ellipse, the bigger the difference of stiffness ratio. Explicit equations relating the ratio of short to long axis of the ellipse, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio are given and verified by numerical examples. 0 1997 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd.

A theory describing plastic deformation of granular (purely frictional) materials is presented. The theory is developed from postulates for energy dissipation and for the mode of plastic deformation. The postulates are based on some restrictions for the properties of granular materials and on a fric

The effective nonlinear response of random composites in which one or more components with nonlinear J-E response, where J is the current density and E is the electric field, is studied theoretically and numerically. The nonlinear response of the constituents is assumed to have the form J = ere + z(
