Abstract
Computerized ionospheric tomography (CIT) is one of the most recent developments in the area of remote sensing of the ionosphere. This system is a special case of limited angle tomography in which not only are projection angles limited, but the number of samples per projection varies. This article presents an orthogonal decomposition framework for unifying CIT algorithms including both generalized classical algorithms such as the algebraic reconstruction technique, the direct Fourier method, and filtered backprojection, and algorithms using basis functions from a priori information. This article discusses the orthogonality of the basis functions associated with the classical techniques and presents simulations comparing the use of a priori information in filtered backprojection and orthogonal decomposition.ยฉ1994 John Wiley & Sons Inc
