✦ Synopsis
Abstract
We hypothesized that the defective cellular regulation of Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) might be reflected in an increased rate of oropharyngeal virus excretion, but we found that the prevalence of excretion in 45 RA patients (22%) did not differ from 45 age‐ and sex‐matched non‐RA patients (24%) who were taking similar medications. Increased excretion rates correlated with corticosteroid therapy and male sex, but not with age or serum levels of EBV antibodies.

## Abstract Antibodies to Epstein—Barr viral (EBV) antigens were studied in 12 patients with early (less than 6 weeks) rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and compared to controls. Geometric mean antibody titers to viral capsid antigen, early antigens, and Epstein—Barr‐associated nuclear antigen (EBNA) were
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is an exclusively human herpes virus which is recognised as the causative agent of infectious mononucleosis and which is implicated in the aetiology of several cancers. However, it is particularly remarkable that this virus is harboured without causing symptoms for the lifet
We examined Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific antibodies in serum samples from 64 and 59 patients with EBV-positive and -negative gastric carcinomas, respectively, and 73 healthy controls using immunofluorescence assays. EBV capsid antigen (VCA) IgG and EBV-determined nuclear antigen (EBNA) IgG were
The present investigation was carried out to estimate the prevalence of EBV-associated cases among gastric carcinoma (GC) patients of Russia and the Republics of the former Soviet Union (FSU). With this aim, formalin-fixed paraffinembedded blocks from 206 gastric carcinomas obtained from patients of
