Abstract
Results of some calculations are presented which show that the washout of droplets in a lowβlevel, orographically produced cloud by raindrops falling from a higherβlevel cloud (formed by largeβscale ascent) can augment the rainfall rate by several mm h^β1^ over a hill a few hundred metres high. The dependence of this enhancement upon different meteorological parameters is discussed and calculated values are compared with some observed rainfall rates over south Wales. It is considered that this mechanism is most effective in enhancing warmβsector precipitation over hills.

## Abstract This paper describes a method of using the vertical wetβbulb potential temperature distribution in the warm sector of a depression to estimate the amount of precipitation which that depression will give at a later time. The actual results of applying this method to a number of depressio
## Abstract Following diagnostic work two decades ago, this study examines the longβterm variations of rainfall in the West African Sahel and the underlying circulation mechanisms over the past century. Raingauge measurements bear out DRY regimes during 1910β1919 and 1979β1988 and WET regimes durin
