Theoretical and experimental evidence is collected which indicates that the upper level of the Cz high-pressure bands (d 'D, (v' = 6) +a 31T,) is populated via a potential-curve crossing by the metastable state ?&. This metastable state is populated preferentially during formation of Cz from free carbon atoms.
