A generalized collective mode approach in combination with molecular dynamics are applied for the study of physical mechanisms responsible for the formation of a collective mode spectrum in pure and binary liquids. The origin of different branches of collective excitations in longitudinal and transverse dynamics is studied in detail. Analytical expressions for propagation gaps for shear waves, heat waves and optic-like excitations are derived within the two-variable approximation. The meaning of a purely relaxing kinetic mode, determined mainly by slow density fluctuations, is discussed.
