โฆ Synopsis
We have studied the structural details of the assembly of merocyanine J-aggregates in a monolayer by the use of surface secondharmonic generation (SHG). Within each domain of the J-aggregates the molecular polar axis has the same direction and sense. Observing an interference of the SH light generated from monolayers on both substrate surfaces, we concluded that the domains align with their polar directions parallel to each other but with random senses, so that there is no in-plane macmscopic polarization. We also confirmed that the domains arc randomly oriented at the air/water interface and the anisotropic alignment is produced by the flow due to a vertical deposition process.
