✦ Synopsis

The orientational order S of a dichroic dye dissolved in a liquid crystal has been determined in the nematic, smectic A and smectic B phase of 4-n-hexyloxybenzylidene-4'-nhexylaniline. The used method is based on the absorption measurement of unpolarized light in a homeotropic oriented liquid crystalline layer and in an isotropic layer. The orientational order of the dissolved molecules was compared with the order parameter of the liquid crystalline solvent.

Der Ordnungsgrad S eines dichroitischen Farbstoffes, der in einem Flussigkristall gelost war, wurde in der nematischen sowie in der smektischen Aund B-Phase des 4-n-Hexyloxybenzyliden-4'-n-hexylanilins bestimmt. Die verwendete Methode beruht auf der Absorptionsmeeaung mit unpolarisiertem Licht an einer homootrop orientierten kristallinflussigen Schicht und an einer isotropen Schicht. Der Ordnungsgrad der gelosten Molekule wurde mit dem Ordnungsgrad des kristallin-flussigen Losungsmittels verglichen.
