Prior to August 1996, N&P was a mutual organization providing a wide range of ®nancial services to approximately three million customers. The Society employed some 4500 people. It was the seventh largest UK building society. From August 1996, it became part of one of the UK's leading banks, Abbey National plc.

WHY DO THINGS THE `HARD WAY'?

Organizations that continue to sti¯e the individual by maintaining archaic structures are unlikely to continue to exist. Much has been said and written about the importance of people, but relatively little has been done to transform the words into actions. In tomorrow's world of work, talented people will work for or with organizations that respect and reward them, as individuals, for the contribution they make. Those same people will expect organizations to facilitate their personal development by providing them with some means to continue learning.
