The Development of Chemical Conversion Coatings on Aluminium. (Conference Paper). The growth of the chemical conversion coatings on Al is strongly dependent upon the purity of the metal. For specimens up to 99.99% punty, the Al surface is not homogeneous. flaws are always present in the thin oxide iayer cwenng the Ai surface; such flaws are sited above the grain boundares and cellular boundaries assodated wlth impunty segregation in the Al substrate. These flaws are of the residual type and provtde easy paths for electronic conduction in an otherwise insulating oxide layer. Consequently, coating growth (1.e. the reduction of the dichromate species to hydrated chromium oxide) occurs preferentialty along the grain boundarks or cellular boundaries of the Al substrate.
