Orașul stătea precum un giuvaer strălucitor pe pieptul deșertului. Cîndva cunoscuse tot felul de schimbări și transformări, însă acum Timpul trecea pe lîngă el fără să-l atingă. Nopţile și zilele goneau peste chipul pustiului, dar pe străzile Diasparului era veșnic după-amiază, iar seara nu pogora nicicînd. Nopţile lungi ale iernii puteau bruma nisipul, îngheţînd ultimele picături din aerul rarefiat al Pămîntului —totuși orașul nu cunoștea nici arșiţa, nici gerul. Nu avea nici un contact cu lumea din exteriorul lui; era un univers închis în sine.
Oamenii clădiseră și pînă atunci orașe, dar niciodată unul ca acesta. Unele duraseră veacuri, altele milenii, înainte ca timpul să le șteargă pînă și numele. Singur Diaspar sfidase Eternitatea, apărîndu-se împotriva eroziunii lente a epocilor, împotriva năruirii și a ruginei…
