Optimized Synthesis of the Elusive ε-Fe 2 O 3 Phase via Sol-Gel Chemistry. -Nanoparticles of the title compound embedded in a SiO2 matrix with ε-Fe2O3 phase percentages exceeding 93% are synthesized using Fe(NO3)3 and Si(OEt)4 as precursors.
Optimized ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles are ferrimagnetic and exhibit remarkably high values of room-temperature coercitivity (HC = 20 kOe). The room-temperature magnetic properties of the nanocomposites can be adjusted to obtain soft or hard magnetic materials by controlling the particle size. - (GICH*, M.; et al.; Chem.
