✦ Synopsis

The optimal design of chemical (multistage) systems with recycle back to the first stage is treated. An imbedding method is proposed, which includes the process without recycle as a particular case.

The method is illustrated by means of a specific example: the cross-current extraction cascade. The tabular results are represented on a general graph, giving the optimal three-stage cascade for different recycle conditions.
