โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

By using boundary shape optimization on the end part of a semiโ€infinite waveguide for acoustic waves, we design transmissionโ€efficient interfacial devices without imposing an upper bound on the mouth diameter. The boundary element method solves the Helmholtz equation modeling the exterior wave propagation problem. A gradientโ€based optimization algorithm solves the resulting leastโ€squares problem and the adjoint method provides the necessary gradients. The results demonstrate that there appears to be a natural limit on the optimal mouth diameter. Copyright ยฉ 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

## Abstract This paper presents the design of a wideband corrugated multisectional conical horn using a genetic algorithm (GA). The GA optimizes the length, flare angle, and first slot depth of each section of the horn in order to match the admittance, reduce the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR)

Measured 20.6 GHz near-field amplitude and phase patterns of a pyramidal horn with a ferrite-loaded aperture show broadening of the far-field beam by a factor of at least 3 in the plane perpendicular to the applied bias direction. An aยจerage factor of 2.5 was obserยจed
