โฆ Synopsis
An optimization study applied to rectangular liquid tankers, subjected to some road manoeuvres, is presented and discussed. The optimal geometrical shape, given by the height/width ratio of a container, is computed based on the nonlinear static analysis of the liquid loading arising during such manoeuvres of the vehicle as steady cornering, lane change, or evading of an obstacle. The objective function, represented by the overturning moment around the middle bottom point of the container, is obtained by integration of the static momentum equations and minimized with respect to the container height and fill level and considering the lateral acceleration as a parameter. This study introduces a new concept to liquid tanker design and can be, in principle, extended to the dynamic case accounting for magnified amplitudes of slosh leading.
