✦ Synopsis

The class of quasi-stationary periodic operations is considered in order to find, via Mathematical Programming, a suboptimal solution o.f a periodic optimization problem.

Snmm~ry--The class of quasi-stationary periodic operations is considered in this paper. The optimal control is proved to be bang-bang and the number of switching points is found to be bounded by the number of integral constraints on the control and output variables. As a consequence the problem can be solved via Mathematical Programming. In the scalar ease, which has only one input, one output, one integral constraint, more can be said; as a matter of fact some typical scalar examples are solved by means of simple goometdc considerations.

Quasi-periodic behaviour in meteorological or climatological series is a widespread phenomenon; various attempts have been made to explain such behaviour in physical terms, often invoking external influences in the explanations. Optimal periodic processes with given initial conditions are here considered from a computational point of view. A search plan for the frequency of the periodic process is derived according to a min-max criterion. SnmmRry--The paper deals with the problem of optimization of periodic processes with
