β¦ Synopsis
This paper considers the following charging policy for a battery to back up memories of a computer system: If the voltage of a battery is lower than a prespecified threshold level when the power is on, a battery is charged for a fixed time T. Using the probability theory, an availability of the system is derived, and an optimal time T* to maximize it is discussed. A numerical example is finally given.

Among the various points which are discussed for the selection of batteries for electric vehicle applications, the possibility of fast charging is one of the most relevant. This is particularly true for the lead/acid battery which, at the present state of technology, must be charged at low rates to
## Abstract In this study, a standβalone photovoltaic (PV)/batteryβcharging system is proposed to efficiently charge a leadβacid battery with the available maximum power from the PV array. The relative sizing of the battery characteristics with respect to the PV array characteristics is indicated.
