✦ Synopsis

The bifurcation behavior in laser direct-write deposition of palladium features from palladium acetate films on quartz substrates is examined . Experiments using a scanning laser slit and calculations using a corresponding one-dimensional model indicate that nonlinear changes in the optical properties of the film during decomposition can lead to both steady state multiplicity and dynamic instabilities . The experimental results also indicate that the formation of a molten zone contributes to the optical changes that lead to periodic behavior .
