I.ouvers are extensively employed in optics and i~ architecture, but previous work has largely ignored the effectiveness of louver systems i~l transmitting light. This paper develops equations for the transmittance of various louvers. For use on north and south faces of buildings, the calculated transmittance is generally at least 50 per cent, which is satisfactory. But for east aiid west faces, transmittance is usually less than 10 per cent. Since in the latter case, proper shielding from direct sunlight practically eliminates daylight too, the value of the wiudows is questionable.
