Abstract
Absorption, excitation in vacuum ultraviolet region, emission and decay of emission of alkalineโearth crystals (CaF~2~, SrF~2~, BaF~2~) doped by different concentrations of YF~3~ or LaF~3~ were studied. New emission bands in the region 3โ6 eV and excitation bands just below exciton edges were observed. Unempirical HartreeโFock and density functional calculations of alkalineโearth crystal clusters containing Y or La impurity were performed. We concluded that observed optical bands belong to transitions between interstitial fluorine and trivalent metal parts of pairs Me^3+^โF^โ^~i~. (ยฉ 2007 WILEYโVCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
